Dell releases a major update to the Precision workstation line-up. The big news : new mobile workstation models from top-to-bottom. They are slimmer, lighter, more powerful, and... the new models will bring mobile Intel Xeon CPUs to the market.

The newly announced Precision workstations include a new model for every single mobile workstation. Dell also announced the refresh for the Dell Precision T1700 SFF and moini-tower models.  This leaves open the next generation models for the remaining desktops. PGW expects those refreshes to be unveiled as the roadmap for high-end Intel processors progresses.

And we can wait for the new desktops because the refresh on the mobile workstation line-up is welcome. The Intel CPU delays forced Dell and other manufacturers to extend the lifecycle of models like the Precision M4800 and M6800 at least a year beyond the company's original plan.   Along with new models come new model names. Dell is taking this release as the opportunity to unify the naming - don't let that cause you any confusion - we'll give you the naming transition from the old to the new models.

The mobile workstation naming now groups the products into series naming, eg: 7000 series, 5000 series, and 3000 series. This signifies the performance and expandability characteristics of the workstation.

Below is a table which maps the old naming to the new naming for the Precision family:
