For the past few years, mobile workstations have been all the rage. But nothing can replace a great desktop workstation. HP is pushing out an entirely new Z desktop line along with remote management tools.

One Z4, one Z6, and two Z8 workstations

New desktops – Z4 through Z8 Fury - these HP models pick up where the ZBook Fury G9 leaves off.

Recall the desktop replacement ZBook Fury G9 can have up to an RTX A5500, Core i9 with 16 cores (24 threads), and 128 GB of memory. Pretty impressive for a mobile workstation.

The Z4 G5 desktop starts with two RTX A6000 GPUs, a Xeon W7 CPU with 24 cores (48 threads) and 512 GB of memory. The top-of-the-line Z8 Fury G5 offers up to four RTX A6000 GPUs, a XEON W9 CPU with 56 cores (112 threads) and 2 TB of memory (1 TB at launch).

Everything is a server (sort of)

Each of these new systems can be rack-mounted in your server room. The 8 Fury G5 even contains dual power supplies which can be used in redundant or aggregate configurations.

An added bonus for IT managers, HP is releasing its “HP Anyware Remote System Controller”. With two form-factors, either an internal card or external box, it allows “pre-boot access, BIOS updates, and re-imaging from anywhere”.

That’s a nice touch.

Over-the-top marketing for over-the-top performance

We won’t bother comment on HP’s launch video for the Z8 Fury. It would be nice if marketing teams could allow the inherent, impressive engineering effort used to create amazing desktops shine through with authenticity. In any case, the over-the-top performance is cool.

A Final Perspective

The new Z G5 desktop workstations pick up where the fastest mobile workstations leave off. When you can’t fit the power that you need into a shoulder-bag, then one of the new Z G5 desktop workstations should be on your shopping list.

Where you keep your new Z desktops is up to you - in the office or in the server room. Every one of these new desktops is rack-mountable.

As for performance? Especially the high-end Z8 Fury G5 configuration seems to leave nothing out: four high-end GPUs, a 56 core CPU, 2 TB of memory, rack-mounting, and remote management.
